horizontal tree of fun

this tree had fallen between 2 other trees and hinged in such a way that it was perrrrfect for walking on...
and had enough branches to hold on to along the way...

walking in neverland

the kids and i drove to the creek at the bottom of our property this afternoon...on this windy wonderful day
and we found a huge hedge that went on forever of privet and i explained to jack all the ills of the plant...
but this hedge was carved out in spots by deer i think...so it had almost tunnels through it....which did, despite my dislike of the plant, seem quite magical...
jack took one look at it and said
"come on, let's go into neverland!"
we explored the tunnels and then came back to the creek ...teeming with water...

tom's progress

this is the loft apartment over the garage at their house...
it really is a dream to me
i love the old barn wood and the slate tile floor
and the chicken feeders as light shades
and the giant windows...

RAIN

i drove up to get the kids yesterday...with all these fun stops along to way to hug necks planned....
but the rain was soo terrible that it was probably good that i just kept going...
this is the road just before the adam's house...
and there were sooo many more like it and worse...it was actually kinda fun but i know people were probably flooded out!

a bell wether

so i found out that a bellwether is a sheep term!
a "wether" is a castrated sheep and that sheep wears a bell and kinda leads the flock...or at least you can find the flock because of the bell on that sheep...or something like that.
well, sammie is not a wether but he does have a bell
and we decided on the name "fancy" for the little girl!
it fits her well =)

stuck

notice the tracks ALL the way across the field..
poor josh ...
he was trying to go to the fire station to fill up the truck with gas...
and became stuck with a capital S
we pulled it out this morning so all is well, but goodness, sometimes nothing is easy!

ee-oo

so, josh and i have been talking about culling some chickens...
we are getting low on meat and we just can't need and can't seem to give them away fast enough....all the eggs.
but we didn't exactly plan on this one meeting its end as it did.
josh was riding our neighbors dirt bike and having a little fun zooming by the front of the house....
when a pile of feathers just poofed up into the air...
our little neighbors (melissa and lil' dave, 9 and 12 respectively) sat there is awe as josh stopped the bike and went over to the flopping creature and yanked its head straight off!
o me o my! this is the stuff of nightmares me thinks!
the kids were amazingly nonplussed (am i spelling that word correctly?) and watched as josh skinned it and i packaged it for the freezer...
all in a days work!

apple peel snackers

ok, sooo, this looks disgusting..i'll not pretend otherwise.
BUT, it actually tasted quite nice...
i dried a bunch of apples....and didn't want to toss the delicious healthy peels, so i popped them in the mixer with some walnuts, raisins, green powder, sunflower seeds...and a little agave...and then made leather
i forgot to photo it....and it was gobbled up so quickly, i can't do that now...

comfort food

i remember reading in teh raw book that the author's comfort food became a green salad or a green smoothie
i laughed
and thought....
a BIG whatever to that...
i mean, i liked salad and ate quite a bit....but comfort food!
well, i have to admit, she was right...at least for me....
i eat a big salad at least once a day and feel the world is more right when i do...at least the world inside of clare =)
i made soup yesterday...rootish soup
boiled 1 sweet potato, 1 onion, 1 turnip, 2 carrots and then a cup of red lentils
then purreed it and added some sea salt, cayenne and curry
very warming and the kids liked it (i left out the spices for them)

mum

while i was digging up all the photos of the barn, i found this one of my mum and i
this was taken after i graduated high school.....so i was 18, mum was 52
i loved this jazz band that came on npr every saturday night that was broadcasted live on the radio...
so she found out the little bar in san antonio texas and we went~!

i feel like i have posted this reminiscence before...but that's ok...
i love remembering it!

the barn

a couple days ago i posted photos of the barn in canton where i lived when i met josh...
beautiful land that joan owns...and graciously allowed me to live on...
i took some photos of the photos =) from way back then...
you can see the before in the first one...
and then the next 2 are of the after of the downstairs
and the last one is the upstairs...
i had NO idea how to build anything...so everything was an experiment...and not a lot of money...so an experiment of making something out of nothing...
but i loved it...
like i said, that year was a magical one for me..
i mourned my mum so much...wandered the fields and took naps in the hay...wrote a lot, listened to books on tape, built the chapel in cob about half an hour away for my friend....
it was theraputic...and the simplicity was theraputic too...

quiet

josh just took the kids to meet up with grace for a couple days...and then josh and i will have a couple days here ...
it is so needed and will be wonderful but both of us were sad to think of being without our kids...
it is so strange...and i know this is something that may or may not sort out in my heart in time...
i love those munchkins so much...past taking care of myself, past even feeling the desire to do so
and yet i know of course i need to take care of myself in order to take care of them..and to be around for them!
and in many ways i do...but in others i am just super lacking.
believe it or not, i thrive on time alone...just a little bit...to read, pray, walk....i am not a huge nap taker thoughh i am sure that would be beneficial...but rest for me comes from quiet time...in my own world...whether working on a project or just sitting nestled by the fire...
anyway, i am looking forward to these couple days but like i said, i am missing them already!

our new addition!

isn't she lovely!
here are the prospective names:

jack's ideas:
grasspants
strawberry (he also named our hurt-leg chicken that we rehabilitated, it turned into a rooster and we ate it pet this name)
janey

clare's ideas:
etta
queen mary
elizabeth

i feel certain we will land on janey as jack named her and it would be easy for esme to pronounce...but i like queen mary a lot =)
they are snuggled eating a little snack in the shed...and the chickens and turkey were quite interested in snacking with them...
the colors outside when it rains are just brilliant don't you think!
