potato gun

this is funny
mostly because i have no idea if it is going to work
but as u can see i wasnt exactly holding it too tightly!! ha!!!
it didnt work at the party and i could see it was bc the potato wasnt tight enough
so this morning the kids and i filed the inside of the end of the barell (sp no idea)
so it would cut the potato as u loaded slightly larger than the shaft making for a nice tight fit...
and here is the result ;)

blurry!

of course this is a terrible picture...but i just quickly snapped one with all the colory lights and i wanted to include it!
i am such a white light person...love little twinkling lights that remind me of stars...
but colory lights...well, they make me think of children's laughter...
so it was so nice to have them sparkling away...

i sat outside long after everyone had headed home and the kids were asleep...and just sat with titus a while and watched the moon rise and the fire die ...and the lights shine...
what a beautiful fall it has been so far...
and i think of how it wasn't 2 years ago that we came here and how happy we are..
our lives are so very full...

the kids were very proud of their tree...
jack helped me cut down a little tree...and i drilled holes in it...and then the kids set to work to stick lollipops in all the holes for leaves...

fall festival

the first pics show the fire as it is being put out by the guys....seems jack and esme really did their job well when i asked them to pick up lots and lots of little sticks to start the fire...
i just came along and piled on the big stuff...
well, one little light and it went up quickly...and then started to spread over the hay!
all was well though...a rake, some water and some stomping...

party prep

we had a fall festival for jack and esme's pals this past thursday night...
here are a few of the 'booths' we set up of stuff to do...
beads and acorn hats to make necklaces...these my friend gwen showed me and i thought how lovely they looked!
so the kids and i collected hats and drilled little holes...
the kids then could choose a bead, hat and little pin to thread through and then a rope...
i love them! and jack and esme have made multiple examples =)

the morning of the party i made huge blobs of playdough...we then divided them into little baggies and put a lot of glitter on a table to be kneaded into the dough...
it was fun to watch the kids work...but mostly to see how sparkly with glitter everything became =)

and water beads! these are the coolest things! you can get them in walmart in the florist section...little tiny bags of beads about the size of a pin head...put in water over night and voila! these fun little beads to play with!
i couldn't think of how to use them at the party...these have just been fun for the kids

Ukrainian Orphans 2012

marybeth's friend dara has adopted a little girl from the Ukraine...and this is a letter she has written upon her return....please please read!!
October Update
As I sit here in my cozy house on this rainy October day, I’m overcome with the magnitude of what I’ve gotten myself into with the orphan crisis in Ukraine. I want to go back to bed and wake up in a world where there aren’t kids who are cold, hungry, beaten, and beaten down. The kids I met, the kids whose names I promised not to forget, the faces who come to me in the middle of the night, the kids I remind God of regularly (as if He could forget). As I scroll through the photo gallery on the Homes of Hope International website, I can hear their sweet, earnest voices saying, “I want to come to America”, “I will be helpful”, “I want to………fill in the blank (play soccer, see the ocean, ride a rollercoaster, cook with a mom, ride a horse, see skyscrapers” and the gut-wrencher of all time, “I will be good, please can you find me a family?”.
There are 85 children to whom we made a bold promise to try to bring for a visit to America at Christmas time. I’m feeling a little whackadoodle right now wondering what in the world we were thinking and how in the world are 85 families going to step forth to spend $2950.00 to bring a kid over. A kid they will host for 3 weeks, pour into emotionally, buy clothes for, take to the dentist and eye doctor, try to communicate with, share Jesus with, make sacrifices for, love when that child is hard to love…. And then, yes, do the unthinkable…put that kid on a plane back to the orphanage. Yep, it’s too much to ask. The economy is tough, it’s Christmas time for pete’s sake, there’s an election going on, helloooo?, we have plans, we’re traveling, it’s my parent’s 50th wedding anniversary (that’s my reason), my kid’s Christmas comes first, what if it’s awful? What if it ruins our Christmas? I could never send the kid back, it would break my heart.
I can’t argue. I can’t even get my husband to agree to host again so soon after Nadia’s visit, and my kids aren’t jumping on the bandwagon either. But this morning I read my devotional through tears….okay, wracking sobs, and Jesus whispered into my heart, “Because of your faith, it will happen” Matthew 9:29. So I’m throwing myself on the life raft of faith thrown out by the God “who is ABLE to do immeasurably more than anything I can think or imagine” because truly I’m sinking at believing that what we have asked God to do…he might not do.
And while I could feel guilty for asking too much of God and of you, I know this: God is FOR these orphan kids. And guess what? He’s for us too. So if we step out and do the unthinkable, spend the unbelievable sum of money, invite the unknown orphan into our homes, twist the arm of fate and step out in crazy faith to host an orphan this Christmas….He is for us. God tells us that true and holy worship is to care for the orphans and widows in their distress( James 1:27) I don’t want to give gifts this Christmas…I want to give the Christ of Christmas true and holy worship.
If you’re still reading to this point and haven’t closed the letter cause Dara’s getting a little too much all up in your gravy…keep reading. Like I said, I haven’t strong armed my own family into hosting this Christmas, and because I’m a ‘good wife’, I’m going to ‘submit’ to my husband’s lead in this knowing that he is a good and Godly man….all the while praying that his heart might be changed by God and that we might get the privilege of loving one of these amazing children in two months. If we don’t end up hosting it won’t make me or my family less compassionate or less righteous or less loved by God. We’d just miss out, that’s all.
You truly might not be in a place where you can host, and if God isn’t in it, then believe me you shouldn’t. It’s too hard to do without His full blessing and provision. But maybe you could give a few dollars to provide a scholarship so that a family who wants to host but can’t afford it, could do it. Or maybe you could share the Homes of Hope website with your friends, small group, family, hairdresser, co-worker, dog sitter? Or maybe you could pray, pray, pray for host families and for God to work in a super-natural way? Or maybe you could sponsor a kid for $34/month through Lifesong for Orphans….I have pictures of ten kids from Kharkov, Ukraine that I’m finding sponsors for….and we come full circle with me deep breathing so I can keep from hyper-ventilating over the magnitude of what I’ve gotten myself into J
Thank you for reading this. I actually feel better now that I’ve been reminded that “God’s got this”.
Don’t be afraid to ask me questions about any or all of the above. Don’t be afraid to ask me to talk to your small group either…I can do this without crying (well, I did it once without crying and I’m pretty sure I can do it again!) Do ask me to see pictures, or go to www.hohinternational.com website and go to photos. The password is ‘sharehislove’ (it pays to know me J) Do ask me about these kids…I love remembering them
God bless you for even thinking about it!

Dara

it is just a word

i was driving down the road today with jack and esme...and we all wanted a change from our books on cd...jack with his boots and camoflauged hat on asked for country music. esme inquired if 'o say can you see was country or not' ...
a song came on with that slow country lilt and said 'damn' something or other...
and strangely i just smiled.
bc i realized ...well, let's say i verbalized to myself for the first time that i really didn't mind listening to a song with my kids that has the word 'damn' in it...and that hearing it as a 6 year old or a 4 year old is far far from the end of the world.
bc let's just face it...it is just a word.

now for those of you who know me further than the typed word, you know i just don't use swear words..i never have...i surely can't even bring myself to repeat a few of them even in the occasional story...and i think that is just fine...

i think it is just this realization that our children are little adults...or adults in the making...they will make up their own minds about all sorts of things...when they have asked me about certain words before like 'darn' or 'heck' or 'crap' i tell them those aren't bad words per se....just words that sometimes adults use and when they are adults they too may or may not choose to use them, but for now, we don't (and honestly bc they sound so slang to me...we can come up with better words)...but i try not to tell them they are wrong to say....

bc here is my point (goodness, i can't seem to get around to it) life is big and brief...and i dont' want them to spend a moment bound up in any silly argument with themselves over a judgement of a person bc they say "damn" or bc they smoke or bc they drink beer or bc they ride a motorcycle or bc they are rough around the edges.  i want my children to judge people's character. to count kindness and loyalty and bravery above anything outward. i want them to be able to sift through all things and people to find wisdom. and i want them to recognize genuine love and honestly whatever the face it has.  likewise, i do not want them to trust only that which looks pretty...that which looks 'perfect'.  it doesn't matter how you dress up or dress down truth, it is still Truth...and that is what i want to teach them to love and pursue...

my brother tweeked this picture for us...i love it!

jack...o how i love that boy
